The idea of seeing a therapist can be scary for some. It means admitting that something might be wrong. When deciding whether therapy is right for you, it’s important to know how therapy works.

Therapy works when you feel comfortable with your therapist. It’s about being with someone who you trust and who you feel cares for you. It’s being able to talk with someone that isn’t going to judge you.

Therapy works because:

  • You have the opportunity to open up and tell your therapist anything about yourself (your feelings, thoughts, past events, etc.).
  • You allow yourself to go deep inside who you are and what you’re about. It’s important to express and examine yourself while gaining insight into what makes you a certain way and why. Examining, talking, and evaluating yourself with the help of someone you trust can help you get to the root of the problem. Your therapist will help you feel comfortable about sharing tough feelings and events, and they will help you get to the root of the problem.
  • You are working toward a goal. It’s about being comfortable in your own skin, with what you’re about, and what you stand for. Many times, we’re not comfortable with ourselves because we’ve been told to act a certain way or that we are a certain person, and we believe it. Because we believe it, it becomes a part of us. We have to examine those things we believe to decide whether they are true or not.
  • You guide your results. Therapy is a collaboration between you and your therapist, but the results are based on your participation. You answer the questions; you think them through. It takes a brave soul to get in touch with the deeper issues and feelings you are experiencing, and the therapist is there to help you work through those issues.

It isn’t always easy to deal with your problems or to even know what is bothering you. Sometimes, it takes a therapist to ask the right questions or push just a bit to get to where you want to go. Therapy has the power to make yourself a different, better, kinder person. It gives you the opportunity to take your life back.
