Although I haven’t been in the private practice world for too long, one question that I’ve received quite frequently is, “Can I afford therapy?”
While everyone’s financial situations differ, my answer is always a definitive yes. While I personally take many different forms of payment—from cash, to check, to many types of insurance—that’s not quite the most important thing at play here.
The most important thing in thinking about whether or not you can afford therapy is how important your mental health is. You mental well-being is just as important as your physical well-being. Looking after yourself is the best gift you can give yourself, and you want to give yourself the opportunity to be your best self.
In terms of physical health, you want to eat the right food to make your body work the right way. You also want to exercise, get regular physicals, and stay in shape so that you can ensure that you keep your body in good condition. When you’re eating well and exercising, you function better, think better, and sleep better—everything looks better, and you feel good. So what’s stopping you from doing the same thing for your mental health?
There’s no other chance than now to make the most of the life you have in front of you, and your mental health is absolutely paramount to a life of happiness and satisfaction. In my view, therapy really is invaluable—and I’m not just saying that as a mental health professional.
I take pride in my work and truly value the mental well-being of myself and others.
